Garth Brooks wordt de nieuwste ontvanger van The Library Of Congress Gershwin Prize voor populaire song. Garth is de jongste persoon die ooit met de prijs wordt onderscheiden. De officiële ceremonie vindt in maart plaats met een all-star tribute concert in Washington.
Songwriters die eerder de Gershwin prijs in ontvangst mochten nemen zijn Willie Nelson, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, songwriting team Burt Bacharach en wijlen Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, en Emilio & Gloria Estefan.
De Gershwin-prijs, zo genoemd naar de bijdragen aan het schrijven van iconische melodieën door George en Ira Gershwin, erkent nog in leven zijnde artiesten voor hun voorbeeldige prestaties op het gebied van het schrijven van liedjes.
“An award is only as good as the names on it,” says Brooks. “First off, for any musician, the name Gershwin says it all. Add to Ira’s and George’s names the names of the past recipients, and you have an award of the highest honor. I am truly humbled.”
